The atmospheric forest scene, finely detailed bears, and glossy black lacquer finish make this hand-painted Fedoskino box a special collector’s item for lovers of Russian art, nature painting, and traditional craftsmanship.

“Morning in a Pine Forest” – a masterpiece of Russian landscape painting

The design of this Russian lacquer box is based on one of the best-known paintings in Russian landscape art. The original, “Morning in a Pine Forest,” was created in 1889 and is attributed to the famous Russian painter Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832–1898). The bear figures in the original painting were created by his fellow artist Konstantin Savitsky.

The painting is now housed in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and is among the best-known depictions of the Russian forest landscape.

The miniature painting on the lid of this Fedoskino box features a characteristic composition: A mother bear and her three cubs move among mighty pines, fallen tree trunks, and dense vegetation.

A bear family in a morning pine forest

The artfully designed lid depicts four brown bears in a sunlit pine forest. In the foreground lie mighty, partly broken tree trunks surrounded by moss and lush forest vegetation.

Two young bears climb a slanted, broken tree trunk. Another cub stands upright on a fallen trunk, while the mother bear watches attentively at the foot of the tree.

In the background, towering pine trunks fade into a soft, bluish morning mist. Warm sunlight filters through the treetops, creating an impressive interplay of light and shadow.

The finely coordinated shades of green, brown, gold, and blue give the miniature painting remarkable depth. The scene conveys the natural beauty and mysterious atmosphere of a Russian pine forest in the early morning light.

Traditional Russian lacquer painting from Fedoskino

The Fedoskino lacquer box “Morning in a Pine Forest” continues the tradition of famous Russian miniature and lacquer painting. Fedoskino, a town northeast of Moscow, is one of the oldest and most important centers of Russian lacquer art. The local craft tradition dates back to the late 18th century.

The Russian lacquer painting from Fedoskino is characterized by elaborately detailed miniature paintings, careful color gradations, and high-gloss lacquered surfaces. Popular subjects include historical scenes, Russian fairy-tale motifs, portraits, and landscape and animal paintings.

This handcrafted Russian box is made of papier-mâché, a classic material for traditional Russian lacquer boxes. The sturdy yet relatively lightweight construction provides a foundation for the decorative lacquer finish and the artful miniature painting on the lid.

At the bottom of the lid painting is a Cyrillic inscription with the place of origin, “Федоскино” (Fedoskino), the Russian painting title, “Утро в сосновом лесу” (Morning in a Pine Forest), and the signature “Васин Н.” (Vasin N.).

The depiction draws on Shishkin’s famous composition and adapts it to the small surface of the box lid. The finely rendered tree trunks, dense foliage, bear figures, and morning light filtering through the forest give the miniature its expressive impact.

The signed Fedoskino lacquer box by Vasin N. thus combines a famous Russian art motif with traditional decorative craftsmanship.

Black lacquer box with gold-colored ornaments

The Russian papier-mâché lacquer box has a rectangular shape with softly rounded corners. Its glossy black exterior provides an elegant frame for the colorful forest landscape.

The lid is framed by an intricate gold-colored ornamental border that runs all the way around. The sweeping ornaments emphasize the traditional character of Russian lacquer art and create a decorative contrast with the dark lacquered surface.

The combination of glossy black, gold-colored decoration, and the vivid landscape miniature gives this hand-painted Russian box a particularly harmonious appearance.

Bright red lacquered interior and practical storage

The Fedoskino casket “Morning in a Pine Forest” features a hinged lid and an interior fully lacquered in a rich red.

The smooth, glossy interior creates a distinctive color contrast with the black exterior and makes the lacquer box a decorative work of art even when open.

Measuring 10.5 × 8.0 × 3.5 cm, the casket is compact and versatile. It's suitable for storing small pieces of jewelry, coins, keepsakes, or other personal items.

The detailed miniature painting also looks especially striking as a decorative standalone piece in a display cabinet, on a dresser, or in a collection of Russian lacquer boxes.
