This Russian lacquer box “Emperor Nicholas II” from Fedoskino is a handmade work of art in the traditional Russian miniature and lacquer-painting style. The lid features a portrait of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II (Nikolai II), who ruled the Russian Empire from 1894 to 1917. This depiction of a historical figure gives the hand-painted Fedoskino box special historical and cultural significance.
The combination of traditional Russian craftsmanship, intricate portrait painting, and classic lacquerwork makes this Russian papier-mâché lacquer box an interesting collectible for admirers of Russian history, the Romanov dynasty, and traditional Russian art.
Emperor Nicholas II – the last tsar of Russia
Nicholas II (1868–1918), known in Russian as Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov, was the last reigning tsar of the Russian Empire. He ascended to the Russian throne on November 1, 1894, after the death of his father, Alexander III, and ruled until his abdication on March 15, 1917.
His reign was marked by profound social and political changes. These included the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 to 1905, the Russian Revolution of 1905, and the Russian Empire's entry into World War I in 1914.
In the course of the February Revolution of 1917, Nicholas II was forced to abdicate. This brought more than 300 years of Romanov rule over Russia to an end.
The tragic fate of the last Russian imperial family
After his abdication, Nicholas II and his family were first placed under house arrest, then taken to Siberia, and finally to Yekaterinburg.
On the night of July 16–17, 1918, the former tsar, his wife Alexandra Feodorovna, their five children, and several members of their household were murdered by the Bolsheviks in Yekaterinburg.
In August 2000, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized Nicholas II and his family as so-called passion-bearers. This canonization referred to their Christian attitude in the face of suffering and violent death, not to the tsar’s political rule.
The portrait on this Fedoskino lacquer box “Emperor Nicholas II” thus commemorates a figure whose life and fate are closely connected with the end of the Russian Empire.
Traditional Russian lacquer painting from Fedoskino
The Russian lacquer box from Fedoskino continues the tradition of one of the best-known schools of Russian miniature and lacquer painting. Fedoskino lies northeast of Moscow and is one of the oldest centers of this long-standing craft. Its history dates back to the late 18th century.
Fedoskino miniature painting is characterized by detailed compositions, carefully graded shades, and intricately lacquered surfaces. Classic motifs include historical figures, Russian fairy-tale scenes, landscapes, portraits, and depictions of traditional folk life.
The box was handcrafted in the traditional Russian style from papier-mâché. This material has formed the basis of numerous Russian lacquer boxes for generations and is known for being sturdy yet relatively lightweight.
The glossy lacquered surface highlights the portrait of the last Russian tsar and gives the box its distinctive decorative appearance.
Signed miniature painting by Vasin N.
According to the product label, the lid painting bears the Cyrillic designation of origin “Федоскино” (Fedoskino), the painting’s title “Император Николай II” (Emperor Nicholas II), and the artist’s signature “Васин Н.” (Vasin N.).
The historic portrait motif brings together traditional Russian miniature painting and the history of the Romanov dynasty. As a signed Fedoskino lacquer box, this work of art is especially appealing to collectors of Russian lacquer art and historical portraiture.
